Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week is back from 21–27 September 2020 and with the year we've had, it’s more timely than ever!
For many of us, 2020 hasn’t been easy and the Mental Health Foundation's annual Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) reminds us to take a moment to take stock of our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around us. MHAW is a chance for your workplace to look at the experiences, actions, relationships and surroundings that make you feel good, stay well and uplift your wellbeing.

This year's theme is Reimagine Wellbeing Together: He Tirohanga Anamata - a chance for us all to build on the things we’ve been doing to look after ourselves, and to reimagine wellbeing together, during COVID-19 and beyond.

When our mental wellbeing is strong and our workplace is safe, supportive and inclusive, we are far more likely to feel engaged, be productive and have higher morale and job satisfaction.

te whare tapa whā

This year, the daily themes of MHAW are inspired by Te Whare Tapa Whā, a health model designed by leading Māori health advocate and Mental Health Foundation patron, Sir Mason Durie. Te Whare Tapa Whā describes health and wellbeing as a wharenui (meeting house) with four walls and a foundation that help us identify where we need extra support.

The four walls represent:
  • taha wairua / spiritual wellbeing,
  • taha hinengaro / mental and emotional wellbeing,
  • taha tinana / physical wellbeing,
  • taha whānau / family and social wellbeing, and
  • the foundation is our connection with the whenua / land.

The MHAW website provides some really great resources that are worth checking out! But for those who are a little pressed for time, we have selected some of our favourites, based around Te Whare Tapa Whā, to share with you each day of the week; giving you practical ideas for how you and your teams can reimagine wellbeing in your workplace. We'll send you an email link first thing each morning, so your tips will be but a click away.

EAPworks also has a library of general resources and COVID-19 related resources to help support you and your team. Each day we will share a couple that we think may be particularly helpful at this time.
EAPworks looks forward to Reimagining Wellbeing Together with you!
